01 / THESIS

Concept

MOLT moves through the stages of addiction: the grip, the surrender, the descent, and the long way back. It has no words. Just the body, and what it survives.

Addiction as a molt. Something holds on, sinks in, and has to be shed. The whole identity runs on one contrast: warm skin against a cold organism, both seen through a dying monitor.

A hand stretching a translucent shed membrane
"Some things hold on before they let go."

The film's only line. Present tense, no comfort. Everything else in the kit talks the same way: quiet, and already too close.

STAGE 01

The Grip

It takes hold. Dry skin, black wells for eyes. Human, but already caught.

STAGE 02

The Surrender

Translucent tendrils enter. The body lets them. The organism becomes home.

STAGE 03

The Descent

Cocooned, dissolved, submerged. The self goes under, cold and clear as glass.

STAGE 04

The Long Way Back

The skin comes away like a glove. What's left is a loss, and also survival.

02 / WORDMARK

Wordmark & Logo System

The mark is a signal on a failing screen. Four letters, monospaced caps, wide tracking. Glowing phosphor, or clean bone. Nothing else.

PRIMARY · PHOSPHOR MOLT
INVERSE · INK MOLT

Construction

Set in the display monospace, all caps, weight 700, tracking +0.16em. Never condense, italicize, or re-letter. The tracking is the logo.

Clear space

Minimum margin on all sides = the height of one "O". The mark always sits in a black or bone field, never on an image without a scrim.

Minimum size

Screen: 72px wide title-card, 18px in-body. Below that, drop the glow. Legibility beats effect.

✕ Don't

Add a second color to the letters.

✕ Don't

Tighten tracking or use a rounded font.

✕ Don't

Place glowing mark on warm skin tones.

✕ Don't

Outline, emboss, or add drop shadows.

03 / COLOR

Color System — extracted from the render

One organism, two temperatures. 56% of every frame is cold blue-black void. Everything alive is either synthetic teal or human warmth. The palette is sampled directly from the final film.

Signature ramp — cold organism

Counter ramp — human warmth

04 / TYPE

Typography

Two voices. A terminal monospace for anything the machine says: titles, timecodes, credits. A quiet grotesque for anything human. The machine always talks in caps.

Timecode style

00:53:12 · SEQ_03

Machine metadata always monospace, teal, uppercased.

Tracking law

Display ≥ +0.14em. Body 0. Never letterspace the grotesque.

Case

Machine = UPPERCASE. Human = sentence case. Never mix within a line.

05 / MOTION

Motion & Title Language

Type behaves like a signal on dying hardware. It flickers, sweeps, tears, and dissolves into ASCII. Nothing eases in or out. It's electrical, or it's wrong.

Phosphor flickerMOLTIdle title state. Random dropout every ~3s. Steps, never fades.
Scanline sweepMOLTA bright bar passes on entrance / scene change.
Signal tear / chromaMOLTRGB split on impact beats. Teal + amber, the two temperatures.
ASCII dissolveMOLTThe molt transition — image blurs to characters, then re-forms.

Timing

Cuts on breath and machine hum. Holds are long; transitions are abrupt. No cross-dissolves except the ASCII molt.

Easing

steps() and linear only. If it feels designed, it's wrong. It should feel broadcast.

Sound-linked

Every title event carries a sound: a hum swell, a tape stop, or silence.

06 / IMAGE

Cinematography & Image World

Extreme macro. Wet skin against dry void. One cold key light, no fill. The camera is always too close to be comfortable.

+ Always

  • Frame in extreme close-up: pores, freckles, capillaries.
  • Keep the background a true black void (#04080B).
  • Single cold key from above; let shadows go to nothing.
  • Warm skin as the only heat in the frame.
  • Let the synthetic teal be translucent, wet, catching light.

× Never

  • Wide establishing shots or visible environments.
  • Warm/tungsten fill or golden-hour grading.
  • Saturated non-teal color (no reds, greens, purples).
  • Clean, dry, "beauty-lit" skin.
  • Symmetry that feels calm. Keep it slightly off, airless.

Grade

Crush blacks, lift nothing. Teal in shadow, neutral-warm in skin midtones.

Lens

Macro / 100mm feel, shallow DOF, focus on the point of contact.

Motion

Slow and involuntary: breath, drips, micro-tremors. Never a handheld whip.

Subject

The body is a landscape. No full figures until the final molt reveal.

07 / TEXTURE

Texture & Post FX

Everything is seen through a degraded screen. These six textures are what hold the title cards, the footage, and the kit together.

Scanlines

2px repeating dark lines at ~35% over all output. The room the film lives in.

Fractal grain

Fine overlay noise at 5% (overlay blend). Kills digital cleanliness.

ASCII decay

Faces resolve into =+*#: glyphs at transition points. The molt, as text.

Phosphor halation

Bright teal blooms and bleeds. Glow lives on the mark and highlights only.

Chromatic tear

Teal/amber RGB split on impact frames. Once per beat, no more.

Wet specular

Membrane and skin always carry a live specular kick. Nothing is matte.

08 / VOICE

Voice & Copy

The film has no words, so this voice carries everything around it: titles, captions, the logline. Present tense, hushed, clinical. Name the body plainly and don't explain it.

ASome things hold on before they let go.
BA visual journey through the stages of addiction.
CThe grip. The surrender. The descent. The long way back.
DNo words. No explanation. Just the body, and what it survives.
EMOLT — some things hold on before they let go.
Clinical
Names the body's parts plainly. No metaphor when a fact will do.
Complicit
Second person where it fits. It puts the viewer inside the body, not across from it.
Hushed
Low volume. Silence and whitespace do the work. It never shouts.
Tender
There's grief under the horror. The molt is a loss before it's a threat.
09 / APPLY

Applications

The system in use: key art, title card, end credits, social cut-down. Same rule on every surface. Void, one warm subject, one cold signal.
